Do you ever get into a reading rut? Where no plot really interests you, so you take days, weeks, months off reading?
I was in a rut, until I picked up Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. I stayed up all night reading it, and it has one of those plots that you just can’t forget. Here are some other reading recommendations to help you escape the reading rut:

I’ve already moved onto my next book—Where’d You Go, Bernadette—which I’m enjoying already. (I’m a big fan of epistolary novels like Almost Like Falling in Love and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society so this is a treat!) And here are some books I’m either reading or planning to read soon:

I also find that asking friends for recommendations is a great way to find new, different reads! I had heard about Gone Girl from a couple of friends here in town as well as Lisa and Lauren! (Lauren also told me about Where’d You Go, Bernadette.)

As you know, I’m definitely in a reading rut. I think it tends to happen when I get really busy — during those times, I need a good escape, and something that isn’t terribly involved, which can be difficult to come by. So I just watch TV before I go to bed instead. Rereading Harry Potter is helping though!
Thank you for this list – I needed some good new reads!

Glad you liked it!
love this list! i adored where’d you bernadette! thanks for sharing the so good they can’t ignore you book – adding it to my list!
I have high hopes for So Good They Can’t Ignore You; I’ve been reading Cal Newport’s blog for years (or at least I did, when I was in college, since his tips are geared toward students) and they helped me rock it my junior and senior years. Thanks for the (inadvertent) recommendation for Where’d You Go, Bernadette?
Totally bookmarking this post. Gone Girl and The Hunger Games pulled me out of my reading ruts. I finished both within a day or so.
I just recently read Gone Girl and I loved it. The new JK Rowling book – Casual Vacancy – is also really good. But right now I’m reading Under the Banner of Heaven and I enjoy it so far.
I’m really excited to get started on some of these. I’m about 10 in to my goal of reading 50 by my 30th next year…adding these to the list!

Thanks so much for sharing these books! Right now I am reading Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling and it is great! But I am about to embark on a four day road trip so books on tape will be a necessity! So excited to have some good suggestions!
Thanks for the recommendations- I’m always looking for new books to add to my list :) I just finished reading the Silver Linings Playbook, which I thought had a really fun, quirky story. Can’t wait to see the movie that’s coming out soon!
