A Prep at New York Fashion Week

As you know, my wardrobe tends to err on the preppier side—which means that it is, if anything, the opposite of high fashion. So what on earth am I supposed for wear to New York Fashion Week?

Enter my old standby, the little black dress (henceforth referred to as LBD). Some might say the LBD is overrated, with little red dresses and little lace dresses popping up in its stead—but the LBD stands the test of time. Unless you get an extraordinarily trendy dress, a good LBD will last year for years, and you’ll be able to mix and match accessories and shoes without an issue!

Want any easier way to shop the looks? Here’s the image roll! (P.S. If you’re reading this on Google Reader, click through the link to access.)

Classic and sophisticated, the LBD will always win in my book. Since I’m still not buying any black clothing in 2012, I’ll be wearing my favorite LBD—a random Urban Outfitters find, with a flattering sweetheart neckline—and my mint-colored kate spade Karolina pumps (similar). The key to not breaking the bank is mixing and matching; I spruce up my $50 UO dress with much nicer, well-constructed heels.

Side note: I thought briefly about wearing my navy Lilly Pulitzer Weiss dress, but I’m worried that it looks too Lilly for Fashion Week. Thoughts?

P.S. Not heading to Fashion Week? No worries—the looks featured above are great for anniversaries, weddings, bachelorette parties, and more. If you plan accordingly, you’ll be able to wear an outfit for all four types of functions!

  1. So excited for you!! You can’t go wrong with an LBD and heels with a pop of color.

  2. Love all your suggestions. After searching for my own LBD this weekend (Hello labor day sales) I was disappointed (everything looked so… trendy and not “me”.) I actually came away with a MBD (medium black dress)- jersey knit, 3/4 sleeves, wrap dress that will transition into fall well. I hope.
Preppy confession: I got it at Banana. #preppynerdsunite !
